ECDC (EWRS)
Reporting on March 2013 – February 2014 surveillance data and epidemic intelligence data to the end of March 2014)
•During the recent 12-month period (March 2013 to February 2014), 30 EU/EEA countries conducting measles surveillance reported 9 961 cases. Twenty-six of the 30 contributing countries reported consistently throughout the 12-month period.
•Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and the United Kingdom reported a total of 9 077 cases, accounting for 91% of the cases in this period.
•In ten countries, the measles notification rate was less than one case per million population during the last 12 months.
•Fifty-six per cent of the cases had a positive test result in a measles laboratory test (serology, virus detection, or isolation).
•Of the 9 359 cases for which information on vaccination status and age were available, 88% were unvaccinated. In the target group for routine childhood MMR vaccination (1-4 year olds), 79% of the cases were unvaccinated.
•Three measles-related deaths were reported during the period March 2013 to February 2014, and seven cases were complicated by acute measles encephalitis.
•A number of measles outbreaks were identified by epidemic intelligence in different European countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain). For more information, see the ECDC CDTR.
